Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War first as Colonel of the 88th New York Volunteer Infantry, then as commander of the famed "Irish Brigade" of the Army of the Potomac. He was killed in action while leading it in an assault on the Confederate entrenchments at Petersburg, near the Hare House, on the evening of June 16, 1864.
