Jane Mary Weiss
"Whether it was arguing over art history with her son Eric, throwing clay on her potter's wheel or sketching portraits, Jane Mary Weiss was happiest when she was engrossed in art. Her favorite moments were spent as a high school art teacher. "She had some nice successes there with some students, a couple of whom went on to make art a career," said her daughter, Cynthia Klapperich. Mrs. Weiss, 78, of McHenry died of complications from emphysema Monday, April 11, in Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry. Born Jane Mary Henley in Hibbing, Minn., she graduated from Stillwater High School in 1945, then received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Minnesota. She later received a master's degree in art history from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She married H. Howard "Mose" Weiss in 1950 and they moved to McHenry a year later. He died in 1974. While raising her children, she began substitute teaching and later landed a full-time position as an art teacher in Richmond-Burton School District 157, where she worked for a few years. For several years, she also participated in the annual country art fair in McHenry, where she would sketch portraits. In 1995, she started writing "Twice Told Tales," a Northwest Herald column that highlighted past happenings in McHenry. She never abandoned her love of art, and in her later years, she created elaborate clothing for relatives. Mrs. Weiss was a member of the McHenry Country Club, the Woodstock-McHenry Chapter of the League of Women Voters, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. She also loved playing bridge. Other survivors include a son, Kevin; a sister, Judith Morrison; and 12 grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home, 3519 W. Elm St., McHenry. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home."
