Rosie Mae Boyd (Speed) Edwards, age 89, Pleasant Ridge Manor-East, passed away Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Pleasant Ridge Manor.

She was born March 10, 1921, in Morton, Miss., daughter of the late Edmond and Ella Mae Crudap Boyd.

A resident of Erie for 62 years, she was retired from St. Vincent Health Center after many years of service in the Housekeeping Department. She had previously worked at Hamot Medical Center in the Housekeeping Department and in many capacities at Blanks Beauty and Barber Shop.

She was a former member of Sanctuary AME Zion Church where she was Mother of the Church and a Deaconess. She was also a former member of Victory Christian Center and First Good Samaritan AME Zion Church where she served as a Deaconess, Usher, on the Kitchen Committee, the Missionary Board and sang in the choir.

She loved gardening, both flowers and vegetables, and quartet singing. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Rosie will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Ray Edwards; a son, Otis Speed; three daughters, Velma Green, Thelma McLaurin and Pearly Mae Edwards; six brothers, David, Frank, William "Dub", Mack "Buddy", Caesar "Sugar Bay" and Jack Boyd; and three sisters, Minnie Alexander, Mariah Johnson and Margaret Boyd.

She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Lavell and Paul Speed, both of Erie; four daughters, Rev. Mary Blanks (Joseph), Emma Jean Ridgeway, Mary J. Lewis, all of Erie and Rose Marie Lofton of Dayton, Ohio; 30 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at First Good Samaritan AME Zion Church, 3209 Pennsylvania Avenue, followed by a funeral service at 7 p.m. conducted by Rev. Fletcher L. Hudson, Sr.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
