Alvin Lorren Stoddard was the third of four children born to Lorren Ervin and Harriet "Hattie" Eliza (Smith) Stoddard. He was born 4 January on the home farm northeast of Hurley, South Dakota.

He attended Sioux Falls College, where he played on the basketball team and ran track. He married Lydia Eckstein of Hurley at Hurley on 6 August 1935. After graduation from Sioux Falls College, he taught and coached in several schools, including those at Farmer, Viborg, and Vienna, South Dakota. In addition to teaching, he was Superintendent of Schools at Vienna, Selby, Humboldt, and Wakonda, South Dakota. He attended summer school at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, and received a M.A. degree in education in 1956. He served a term as president of the South Dakota School Administrators Association.

After retiring in 1973, he and Lydia moved to Granite Falls, Minnesota. He suffered a stroke in 1986, after which they moved to the Trees Resort near Cass Lake, Minnesota, to be near their daughter, Jo Ellen (Stoddard) Helm. Later, in 1992, they moved to Prairie Village, Kansas.

Alvin loved sports. Besides playing basketball and running track in college, he played town team baseball for many years. He also loved to hunt and fish.

Alvin died 19 January 1996 at Delmar Gardens Nursing Home, Overland Park, Kansas. Lydia, died 9 January 1998, also at Delmar Gardens Nursing Home in Overland Park. They are buried in the Hurley Cemetery south of Hurley, South Dakota.
