Of Douglas County
Schools Passes
A former Douglas County superintendent of schools, Mrs. Edith S. Ackert, 74, died Friday at the home of her son-in-law amd daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Stingley, in Riddle.
She was a resident of the county for 45 years. She was born at Waverly, Kan., March 13. 1883, and was graduated from Oklahoma City University. She taught school in Arizona until she came to Myrtle Creek in 1912.
She was married Nov. 22, 1914. to Kitt Ackert, who preceded her in death Feb. 20, 1931.
Mrs. Ackert taught at Myrtle Creek High School until 1924, when she was elected county school superintendent, a position she held for 12 years.
Following this, she served as substitute teacher in several county schools. Since her retirement, she has devoted much of her time to the organization and advancement of the Douglas County Retired Teachers Assn. She was a charter member of the South Umpqua Study Club.
Surviving are two daughters. Mrs. Albert (Carol) Stingley and Mrs. Stewart (Eva) Taylor, both of Riddle; a sister. Mrs. (Gwennie S. Howard, of San Bernardino, Calif.; a brother, David Stoolfire of Texas; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews and cousins, one being Chester Jennings of Winston.
Funeral services are scheduled Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Long & Orr Mortuary in Roseburg. The Rev. Newell Morgan of the First Christian Church of Roseburg will officiate. Concluding services and interment will be held in the Myrtle Creek IOOF Cemetery.
