Born January 13 1844 in Cumberland County Virginia, he was the son of Drury Miles, b. ca 1797, d. 1869, a veteran of the War of 1812, Jesse Woodson's Company Virginia Militia, and Mary "Polly" Smith, (1813-1852). Polly Smith was the daughter of Richard Hardiman Smith (1768 - 1852) and Mary "Molly" Childress Scott Smith (1775 - 1841) of Buckingham county VA, and the granddaughter of Joseph Scott (1755 - 1793), a Revolutionary War soldier.

William Miles is named as an heir of Richard H. Smith through his mother Polly Miles in an 1876 Buckingham county VA lawsuit filed between brothers Gabriel and Edward Smith over 445 acres of land owned by Richard Hardiman "Jeffrey" Smith and his father Robert "Robin" Smith. William J. Miles was granted a portion of the 445 acres in the settlement provided he take care of his uncle Gabriel Smith until Gabriel died.
