Smith through his mother Polly Miles in an 1876 Buckingham county VA lawsuit filed between brothers Gabriel and Edward Smith over 445 acres of land owned by Richard Hardiman "Jeffrey" Smith and his father Robert "Robin" Smith. William J. Miles was granted a portion of the 445 acres in the settlement provided he take care of his uncle Gabriel Smith until Gabriel died.
