According to "family history" records written prior to 1900 by Jane Sinclair Ferguson and Mary Sinclair Falls, (daughters of Gregory Sinclair (1796-1876) the Samuel Sinclair family lived, prior to coming to America, near Cookstown, Tryone County, Ireland.

In the family history it states that this family were members of the Seceder Church of Sanoles Kirke near Cookstown. (Later research by Thomas Sinclair of California reveals that the name should have been Sandholes) The family record also states that Samuel and Rebecca were born in Scotland and describes the tartan of the Sinclair family. Samuel married Rebecca Barrett in Scotland and moved to Ireland where their children were born. This family record states that about the time of the move to Ireland, Samuel's sister, Mary Sinclair Purvis and a brother, Benjamin Sinclair came to America and settled west of the Alleghanies in the territory known (at the time of the writing) as Ohio.

In 1818. sons Gregory and William came to America settling in Lincoln (now Gaston) County, North Carolina where friends and relatives had already settled. Two years later, they sent for the rest of the family. Sadly, wife Rebecca and a son named Samuel died prior to this move.

Samuel, age 70-80, is found on the 1830 census of Lincoln County, North Carolina in the household of his son Gregory. As he moved with family members to Tennessee in 1834 and died prior to the 1840 census no additional census information will be found.

The town of Lutts was known as Pinhook at the time of his death.
