MATTOON — Edith Katherine (Auffenorde) Lowry, age 97, of Mattoon, IL, passed away at 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at Mattoon Health Care, surrounded by her loving family. The funeral mass in her honor will begin at 3:00 p.m., Friday, October 15, 2010, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Mattoon, IL, with Reverend Dennis Kollross officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, also at the church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, located at 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL, 61938, is assisting the family with arrangements. Mrs. Lowry was born January 18, 1913, in Quincy, IL, the daughter of Joseph and Matilda W. (Behnen) Auffenorde. She spent her school years in Quincy, Charleston, and Trowbridge, IL, and married Gerald Lowry in Mattoon, IL, on May 15, 1948. He passed away in 1971. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Florence Henrietta Auffenorde, who passed away in 1998. In 1948, Edith began her employment with the General Electric Company where she worked for many years before retiring. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and a devout Catholic. She loved to cook and cherished time spent with her family, especially playing marbles and Yahtzee with her grandchildren. After retiring, she devoted many hours to volunteering. She was a Quilter and member of the VFW. Edith was an example to all with her kindness and loving ways. She had a big heart and a strong spirit. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials are made to the St. Mary's Catholic School.
