Mass of the Resurrection for Elmer Victor Morse, age 86, a resident of Mooresville, North Carolina and New Smyrna Beach, who passed away Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville, will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2011 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, New Smyrna Beach, with The Reverend Deke Miller, officiating. Calling hours will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, April 8 at Settle-Wilder's New Smyrna Beach chapel.

Born January 6, 1925 in Bridgewater, Maine to the late Jacob and Hilda Morse, Mr. Morse attended school in Bridgewater and Rhode Island. He enrolled in Sheepshead Bay Maritime Training Center and left to join the Merchant Marines in 1943. Elmer had many war stories, including the Battle of the Bulge and after serving his country during World War II, he married his loving and devoted wife, Dawn Margaret on October 29, 1949.

After many long and cold winters in Maine and New York, in 1960 they moved to the Daytona Beach area to raise their family. Elmer operated service stations for years in Maine, Jacksonville, Daytona and the Holly Hill area, retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, New Smyrna Beach, and was a current member and Vice President of the Otto J. Ernest Merchant Marine Chapter of Mooresville.

Friends and family will remember him for his unique sense of humor and being an all-around "fix-it" man. He lived life to the fullest, enjoying camping, fishing, shrimping, reading the Bible and watching game shows. A loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, his greatest joy in life was his family, who he spent many memorable times with over the years.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dawn; two daughters, Victoria Briggs and her husband Hartwell, of New Smyrna Beach, and Marcia Morgan and her husband Logan, of Morganton, North Carolina; three sons, Mark and his wife Renee, of New Smyrna Beach, Andrew and his wife Mary, of Augusta, Georgia, and John and his wife Kim, of Mooresville; 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Morse was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Jane, a sister, Rena, and a brother, Max.

A memorial service will be held in North Carolina at St. James Episcopal Church, 851 Shinnville Road, Mooresville at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, 2011. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Condolences may be made online at www.settle wilderfuneralhome.com.
