Charles Edward Bland, 90, of Clinton, Mississippi died Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at Trinity Mission Health and Rehab of Clinton. Funeral services are scheduled for 12:00 noon on Friday, October 8, 2010 at Lakewood Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Jackson, Mississippi. Visitation will be Friday from 10:00 – 12:00 noon. Charles was born May 13, 1920 in Wetzel County, West Virginia. He was the son of Albert C. and Nettie Wade Bland. In 1942, Charles met and on February 11, 1943 he married the love of his life Minnie Lou Henley of Tampa, Florida.
Charles served his country in the Pacific area during World War II (1941-1946) as a member of the 558 Air Service Group of the United States Army Air Force. After the war, Charles attended Florida College (1946-1950) and was a member of its first graduating class. Charles had the distinction of being the first Mr. Florida College in 1947. Charles served the following Churches of Christ: Lecanto, Florida 1947-1950; Pine Buff, Arkansas 1949-1950; McEwen, Tennessee 1950-1954; Houston, Mississippi (North Jackson Street) 1954-1979. Upon leaving Houston, Mississippi he and Minnie Lou moved to the Tampa, Florida area where he preached at the 40th Street Church of Christ. He retired due to increasing heart problems. In 1995, he and Minnie Lou retired to Clinton, Mississippi where they attended the McRaven Road Church of Christ. Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Albert C. and Nettie Wade Bland; and by a brother, Edgar Edwin Bland; and sister, Virginia Olive Bland. Charles is survived by his wife of 67 years, Minnie Lou Henley Bland; two daughters, Shirley Whiteside of Springville, Alabama and Nancy Perry of Clinton, Mississippi, one granddaughter, Beth Chapman of Sevierville, Tennessee, one sister, Thelma Mathias and two brothers, Wilbur Bland and Walter Bland, all of Lancaster, Ohio. --Published in Clarion Ledger on October 7, 2010
