Rufus was born in Clear Creek, a small settlement in the southern part of the Choctaw Nation near present-day Valliant. He was married in 1903 at age 17 to Mattie Era Ellison. Their only child Clarence was born in 1904.

Rufus died at age 18, only a month after his sister Cleopatra and about two months before his mother, Nannie. He died from tuberculosis, leaving behind his young wife and a one-year old son.

He was original Dawes enrollee #1339 for the Choctaw Nation and one-half Choctaw blood.
