Father of Prof. Barbara E. Thornton-Lewis & Norman T. Thornton; brother of Phyllis Stith, and Cora, Joseph G., & William Thornton; father-in-law of Cora R. Thornton & Jeff Lewis II. He is also survived by six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a son, Loren P. Thornton; seven brothers and five sisters.
Interment with full military honors followed services conducted at the Latney's Funeral Chapel, Washington, D.C., Friday, September 4, 2009.
