World War II Veteran & Tennessee Alpha Brother Lieutenant Karl Baum, Jr., U.S. Navy Reserve, 27, was killed in action at Lingayen Gulf while serving as the Deck Officer aboard USS Colorado (BB-45) during the liberation of The Philippine Islands.

On that day, Colorado moved in on a determined inland shore battery and opened up an all-out artillery assault. However, a heavy caliber shell from one of the shore guns rocked the ship as it detonated on her superstructure causing severe casualties among those on the navigation bridge and in sky control.

A native of Knoxville, TN, at University of Tennessee Knoxville, Karl captained the 90-piece band, was a member of ROTC, Pershing Rifles & graduated with the Class of 1939. In OCT 1940, he registered for the draft while employed by the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Company. Based on his Pay Entry Base Date found in Military Registers, Karl joined / was commissioned an officer in the Navy in FEB 1942.

His awards include the Purple Heart.

He was buried at sea in the South China Sea near the entrance of the Lingayen Gulf. Karl is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Manila, The Philippines, and memorialized by his family at Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville.
