Funeral services for John E. Redd, age 75, prominent Martinsville citizen, who died Friday afternoon at his home on Thomas Street here, following a lingering illness were held Sunday afternoon from the late residence.
Burial was made in Oakwood Cemetery.
Surviving besides his wife are the following children: Mrs. H. G. Whittle, Misses Sallie, Ruth and Nellie Redd; Messrs T. B., John E. Jr., Henry and Carter Redd.
One sister, Miss Ruth Redd, and one half-sister, Mrs. Sam Wilson, also survive.
The deceased was one of this city's prominent and influential citizens and engaged in the tobacco business for many years after moving here from Halifax County, Va. about 16 years ago.
He operated the old Brown's Warehouse for a number of years and later was identified with the Farmer's Warehouse.
Retiring from the tobacco business a number of years ago he served as a magistrate of the Martinsville district up until his death.
Among the relatives and friends here on Sunday from out of town for the funeral were his children, Miss Sallie Redd of Washington, D.C., Miss Ruth Redd of Richmond; Capt Henry Redd of V. P. I., Blacksburg, Jno E. Redd, Washington, D.C., J. Barksdale Redd, Chatham, Carter Redd of Birmingham, Ala.
