"Barth, Thelma Madge Braker"-died on April 10, 1998 at Holy Family Hospital.
She was born on the Bridgeport Bar, near Brewster, Washington, on November 9, 1909, and is the daughter of George Cunningham Braker and Nell Cowles Braker, who both preceded her in death. She had one brother, Sidney C. Braker, who also preceeded her in death.
She is survived by her husband, Harold Walter Barth, of Spokane, and by her daughter, Dr. Melissa Ellen Barth, and her second daughter, Dr. Lynne Marie Getz of Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
Mrs. Barth attended Washington State University and the University of Washington and was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She earned degrees in Zoology, Teaching, and Nursing from the University of Washington.
Mrs. Barth taught nursing at Harbor View Hospital in Seattle until she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps as a First Lieutenant in 1942. She served as a nursing supervisor in the European Theater with the Fiftieth General Hospital Division under General George Patton. Mrs. Barth participated in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge and was decorated for both. She returned to Brewster at the end of the war. Throughout her life, Mrs. Barth continued her career as a registered nurse, working in clinics, hospitals, as a school nurse, and as a volunteer nurse.
In 1946, she married Harold W. Barth of Cedarburg, Wisconsin, an officer with whom she had served during World War II. They first lived in Cedarburg, moving to Brewster, Washington in 1947. Their daughter, Melissa Ellen, was born in 1948.
When her husband was recalled to service for the Korean War, the family lived in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, where Mr. Barth served between 1950 and 1952, when the family returned to Brewster. The family moved from there to East Wenatchee, Washington, in 1960, and to Spokane in 1966, where she worked as a Registered Nurse at Holy Family Hospital until her retirement in 1975. Mrs. Barth volunteered as a nurse at Spokane Goodwill and at Indian Trail Elementary School near her home. She was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Spokane. Thelma Barth was beloved by her family and all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to Hospice, the Humane Society, or a shelter for women and children.
