Faye W. Ward, 85, passed peacefully in the early morning of Oct. 13, 2009.

She was born on Christmas Day 1923, in Cherryfield, the daughter of Alvin and Hilda Worcester.

In 1941 she graduated valedictorian from Cherryfield Academy. From Cherryfield she traveled weekly by train to Beal College, Bangor, completing the stenographic program in 1942. After graduating in 1944 in the top 10 percent of her class at the Civilian Payroll Course at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana, she was assigned to the Pentagon, Chicago, and then the Azores, where she met her future husband. She married U.S. Air Force Sgt. William E. Ward in Ellsworth, Aug. 15, 1950. During his career they lived in England and several stateside bases from Maine to Alabama. Faye often found secretarial work at the new duty stations. She was active in the bases' Wives Clubs, and was considered a winning asset on many bowling leagues. Settling in Bangor after her husband's retirement in 1969, her last employment was as computer operator at St. Joseph Hospital. A Jeopardy fan since 1964, she enjoyed outscoring the onscreen contestants from the comfort of her living room. Her most recent pleasures were walking the mall, crossword puzzles and reading. Each year she loved walking the apple orchards to smell the spring blossoms and driving Route 2 to view the fall foliage. Living frugally, she was able to support her favorite charities, including Bangor Public Library, where she cherished untold hours.

She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, William; and her brother, Donald Worcester.

She is survived by her brothers, Alvin Worcester and David Worcester and wife, Betty; daughters, Janis Scott and Cynthia Ward; grandchildren, Bridget, Stuart, Katherine and Douglas Scott; adoring great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Denney; and loving nieces and nephews.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the competent staff of Eastern Maine Medical Center 6-East for their excellent care.

The memorial service will be held noon Monday, Oct. 19, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the service at Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor.
