Lawrence Lesser was born in Sundhausen, Bas Rhin, France June 11, 1838. He immigrated to the United States with his parents. He married Catherine Schirck, May 27, 1866. To this marriage were born eight children: Rosania Catherine(1867-1961),Edwin Baldwin(1868-1942), Carrie Mary Maude (1870-1962), Alice Carlotta (1872-1949), Estella Amelia (1874-1965) Harrison Warren Clayton (1877-1949), Cora May (1879-1939) and Lavinia Lenora (1882-1909).
Like his father and brother (Phillip) he was a blacksmith. He enlisted in the 13th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in June of 1861. The 13th Pennsylvania was one of the most famous regiment in the Union Army. Known as the "Bucktail Rifles" every man was an expert shot and to prove his marksmanship had to show a deer's tail before he was accepted into the regiment. Lawrence fought in all the great battles of the Army of the Potomac until he was captured at Cold Harbor, Va. on May 31, 1864. He spent until the next November in Andersonville Prison and then in Florence S.C. prison until exchanged in March of 1865. June 28, 1865 he was mustered out and honorable discharged as a Private. While a prisoner of war, he read the Bible through completely, four times. It must of helped. He lived through a horrendous experience.
