Painter. He was a successful 19th century German painter, who was known for working in an archaic, medieval style with subjects of various animals in the background along with skulls. He also painted portraits and historical scenes. Born George Karl Ballenberger, the son of a carpenter, he was known professionally as "Karl." He attended a drawing school before being employed in a porcelain factory. In 1822 he learned the profession of stonemason, successfully working in the profession for nine years at Ansbach. In 1831 he followed the artist and collector Friedrich Hoffstadt to Munich, learning to draw from Hoffstadt and entering the Art Academy as well. Two years later, he went to Frankfurt am Main, becoming a pupil at Städel Institute of Art, under the direction of Philipp Veit. His oil painting improved and during the following years, he painted many historical scenes. Besides painting in oil, he painted in watercolors. After making an indepth study of early German art, he was commissioned to paint portraits of Konrad I, Ludwig von Bavaria, Günther von Schwarzburg, and Rupert, King of the Romans. He painted a large picture of the city of Augsburg, showing the Reformation period. He was known for painting of Saint Albert and "Death of St. Meinrad." His paintings are on displayed at the Historical Museum in Frankfurt am Main. He spent the rest of his life in Frankfurt, dying there in 1860.
