Gerald Harding Ransom
Gerald (Jerry) Harding Ransom, 81, of Meridian, formerly of Clear Creek, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2002.
Jerry was born Nov. 1, 1920, in Preston, the son of George and Ave Amos Ransom, and was a member of the LDS Church. He was raised to love and appreciate the outdoors, spending the majority of his younger days hunting, fishing, and roaming the mountains.
He was inducted into the U.S. Air Force during World War II. While in the service, he flew 67 combat missions throughout Europe and hold the rank of technical sergeant. He attended college at Boise Junior College, the College of Idaho and the University of Illinois. He worked for the Boise Independent School District as an elementary teacher. After furthering his education, he took a position with the Idaho State Department of Health and Welfare in 1957, retiring in 1980.
Jerry married Wilma Blackburn in 1947. They had seven children. Education and reading were very important to Jerry and he stressed this with his children. Jerry gave his children a precious gift ... a lifelong passion for reading and books.
Jerry married Maggie Urps in 1983. After retiring, he and Maggie moved to Clear Creek, near Idaho City. They had a home with a huge deck overlooking the back side of Bogus Basin, where they would sit together and watch the beauty of nature right in their yard ... beautiful pine trees, wonderful sunsets, wild turkeys, deer, elk, bear, raccoons, birds, and the beauty of nature's wildflowers. His declining health forced their move to Meridian.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Maggie of Meridian, and Puddles, his most beloved dog and friend; his children, Michael and Dawn Ransom of Boise, Kathy and Dennis Lyons of Meridian, Rick and Letty Ransom of Parker, Ariz., Alison and Phil Lough of Meridian, and Kim and Mike Hollingsworth of Meridian; also 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brother, Charles (Susan) Ransom; and sisters, Elaine Nate and Rita Powell; mother-in-law, Janis Urps: sister-in-law, Estelle (James) Thomas; and brother-in-law, James (Sandy) Urps.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margo Kay; a son, Eddy; his parents; a brother, Loren Ransom; and a sister, Norma Moser.
A funeral service will be held at 1p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the Relyea Funeral Chapel, with viewing from noon until 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Morris Hill Cemetery. Jerry, Dad, Grandpa, we will cherish our memories and carry you in our hearts forever and always.
