John Henry Hartman was born in Lloydsville, Ohio, October 21, 1848, and passed away at his home near Meadville, Nebraska, July 25, 1934, at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 5 days.

At 8 years of age he moved with his parents to Berlin, Pennsylvania. In 1862 he joined the Pennsylvania Home Guards and served until April 1864, and then joined the Union Army and served with Company “H” 187th Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry and served until the close of the civil War. In 1886 he started west, spending a year in Indiana, Michigan, located at Dixon, Illinois. October 19, 1868 he married Ellen Hoyle at Dixon. In 1871 he came to Nebraska, spending one year in Lincoln, homesteading in Polk County, and in 1883 coming to what is now Keya Paha County, locating on the river west of Meadville where he has held continuous residence up to the time of his death.

Nine children were born to this union, two dying in Infancy and Edward at the age of 40 in 1911. Living area; John G. of Meadville, Nebraska; Effie D. Josiassen of Bloomfield, Nebraska: Nettie M. Lampitt of Meadville; Nina E. Moore of Richland, Missouri: and Eva M. and Fred C. of Meadville. His wife preceded him in death in 1915. He has living 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren and one living sister, Mrs. Adam Werner of Berlin Pennsylvania.
