Inscription
After the fall of Vicksburg,as paroles were issued to the Confederates and squads of them began to leave, until July 13 when the last of them marched out of town.
There was one critical difference in the regiment’s condition—now that the shooting had stopped men were dying. On July 8 William Abbey, Richard Hensley, and Jacob Kerian died of disease. Jacob’s brother Kasper was also very sick. The next day Alfred Chappel died onboard the hospital boat City of Memphis.
