John was the son of Patrick and Anna Mae Heaphy Whalen, and was born in Ansonia. His was a big, Irish family, and he was close to them all, even when they were apart. I remember him talking about his brother Matthew, and from those tales I pictured them as being kids together, and was surprised to find that Matt was thirteen when my Dad was born. He Married Mom, Mary June Foley and they had three children, Mary Margaret (the little girl in the picture), John Michael(that would be me, the kid he's holding on the counter in the picture), and Kevin Raymond who wouldn't arrive on the scene for another eleven years AFTER the picture was taken. He enjoyed being with the family, and only left the state he was born in (CT) four times in his life, to my knowledge. He Worked as a machine operator and a supervisor for Hershey Metal in Derby and Ansonia, CT for many years, and worked for Winchester Repeating Arms for five years before retiring.
