George Washington Farson III, age 70, of 4901 Henry's Mill Road, Vernon Hill died Oct. 10, 2010 in Northern Maine Medical Center, Fort Kent, Maine. Mr. Farson was born in Lynchburg Dec. 29, 1939. He was a son of the late Geroge W. Farson Jr. and Julia Henry Farson.

He was a graduate of Spring Garden High School, The University of Virginia and taught at Woodlawn Academy. He played professional baseball in the Baltimore Orioles Organization from 1962 to 1971 as a catcher. He managed in the Orioles Minor League System from 1972 to 1975, then managed in the Oakland A's farm system from 1976 to 1977, and also managed in the Milwaukee Brewers in 1978 and 1979. Mr. Farson was the minor league catching instructor in 1980 and 1981 for the Philadelphia Phillies Organization and scouted until 1989. In recent years he was active in farming and logging until his retirement.

Mr. Farson was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees, Board of Deacons, a member of the choir and taught Sunday school. He was a member of Ruffed Grouse Society and the Baseball Players of America. On August 25, 1960 he married Sarah Mays.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Mays Farson; two daughters, Tammy F. Eastwood and husband, Paul, Vernon Hill and Sandi F. Pruitt and husband, Mike, Vernon, Hill; one son, Michael S. Farson and wife, Kim, Vernon Hill; six grandchildren, Justin Davis, Mike Farson Jr., Tyler Farson, Chelsi Pruitt, Brandi Pruitt, and Michaela Farson. One brother, Charles Henry Farson, also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 from the graveside in the Henry Family Cemetery, Vernon Hill. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 to 8:30 at Mount Tabor Baptist Church, and at other times they will be at the residence 4901 Henry's Mill Road.

The family suggests memorials may be sent to the Keeling Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 12, Keeling, 24566 or Mount Tabor Baptist Church, 13257 Old Richmond Road, Keeling.
