Ila Georgia Odell was the daughter of George Odell and Prudence (Owens) Odell.

Ila Georgia Odell marrid Loyde Gregory in 1934.

Ila Odell Gregory passed away on October 6, 2010, in the Vici Nursing Home where she had resided since February of 2004.

Ila Georgia Odell was born to Prudence (Owens) and George Odell on March 30, 1913. She was the seventh child and fifth girl born to the couple.

Ila attended grade school at Cestos and Richmond Schools. She graduated from Richmond High School in 1929 and then entered college in Alva, Oklahoma, for teacher's training and graduated with a B.S. degree. She began teaching in 1932. In 1934, she married Loyde Gregory. They made their home in Vici. In 1942, Ila resigned from Lone Star School in Ellis County to go into defense work. She worked at Boeing until VJ Day. Loyde worked at Beechcraft and served two years in Aircraft Maintenance for his country. After his discharge, they returned to Vici. Ila began teaching in Vici in 1946 and taught there for 26 years.

Loyde entered construction work in 1950 which took him away from home, so Ila spent summers with him, thereby seeing much of the country which made her a better teacher.

Ila was baptized in 1936. She became a member of the Vici First Christian Church and served in many capacities: teacher, choir, mission chairman, and missionary president. She helped serve many funeral dinners and supported all the church endeavors.

Her hobbies were gardening, antiques, plate collecting, and writing. Her flower garden was a thing of beauty, and she shared it with neighbors, friends, and strangers who stopped to admire it. Ila wrote several items for the Vici Beacon in a column entitled "Just a Minute, Now!" That column permitted readers a glimpse of the world through her eyes. One of her most beloved stories was the true ghost story of Aunt Feenie who lived in Cestos in the 1920's.

Ila earned a "Teacher of Today" award which was presented by the Masonic Lodge in recognition and appreciation of meritorious service to children and youth. She was the recipient of a Leader in Elementary Education award in 1971. She was inducted into the Dewey County Hall of Fame in 1993. Her greatest award came from the bright, happy faces of her students.

Ila retired in 1972 to accompany her husband to New York to build there. The next six years were spent with bookkeeping and running errands. Loyde retired in 1978, and the couple returned to their home in Vici.

Loyde and Ila celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1984. Loyde passed away in 1986. In 1985 Ila enrolled in an exercise class which led to dancing. She enjoyed this immensely, and she soon learned and taught dancing classes for several years. She also began traveling to London, Spain, the Scandinavian countries, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and many places in the United States.

In 1992 Ila underwent heart surgery which was closely followed by a stroke which left her disabled. She spent her time reading and writing.

She was a member of OEA, DEA, and NEA, teacher's organizations, and a past member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of Eastern Star. She has supported local functions and considered herself a Vici Booster.

Ila was preceded in death by her husband, Loyde; father and mother; her two brothers, Ray Odell and Alvin Odell; her sisters, Flossie Shafer, Lola Jenkins, Elaine Westenhaver, Amber Bachman and Beryle (Dot) Bourns; and brother-in-law, Ival Gregory.

She is survived by nieces, Diane Madison and husband Lavern of Exeter, MO and Myrna Fuqua of Seiling, OK; nephew, Ival Gregory and wife Peggy of Stillwater, OK; other relatives, many dear friends and former students.
