George W. Turbeville, Jr.

Funeral services for George W. Turbeville, Jr., of Vaiden will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 15, at Vaiden United Methodist Church in Vaiden, with burial following in the Hopewell Cemetery near Vaiden. Rev. Calvin Cosnahan will officiate the services.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 14, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., at Lee Funeral Home.

Mr. Turbeville died of congestive heart failure at St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. He was 79 years old.

Mr. Turbeville was a graduate of Mississippi State University with a degree in accounting and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was the youngest elected circuit clerk in Carroll County, and this began his love of politics. He was director of the Carroll County Department of Human Services for several years, later being named the Regional Director for the region including Carroll County. He also served 8 years as mayor of the Town of Vaiden. He loved people and he loved the Town of Vaiden and was proud of everything that the town accomplished while he was mayor. As busy as he was, he loved life, and family was most dear to him. It was said of Mr. Turbeville, "You realize you're an ordinary person when you stand by an extraordinary man, which he was." Mr. Turbeville was a member of Vaiden United Methodist Church in Vaiden.

Survivors include his wife, Miriam A. Turbeville of Vaiden; three daughters, Lori Turbeville Pickle of Madison, Kimberly Anne Turbeville of Pearl, and Melissa Turbeville Thomas (Frank) of Madison; three sisters, Jean Turbeville McClain (Arthur) of North Carrollton, Eloise Turbeville Gerrish (James) of Vaiden, and Linda Turbeville Hodges (Phillip) of Clinton; three grandchildren, Madeline Grace Pickle, Frank R. "Trey" Thomas III, and Addley Rebecca Turbeville Fisher; one uncle, Robert Lee; two aunts, Myrtle Smith and Sue Sudduth; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late George and Mattie Lee Turbeville.

Pallbearers will be Louis Alexander, Ralph Alexander Sr., Sam Alexander, Frank R. Thomas II, Ralph Alexander Jr., and Phillip Hodges. Honorary pallbearers will be James Cox, Jerry Carver, Vernon "Buddy" Welch, Charles Ellis, Ken McDougal, Ralph Self, and Dennis Welch.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vaiden United Methodist Church or to the Hopewell Cemetery Fund.
