Jacob L. "Les" Raney, 70, passed away peacefully at his home in Boca Raton on Monday, Feb. 21, 2005. Born in Troy, Missouri on April 8, 1934 to Earl and Ruby Taylor Raney, he married Harriet Hunter, his childhood sweetheart. He attended the University of Missouri, then accepted early admission to Tulane Medical School, briefly serving as a medical officer in the U.S. Army. They moved to Montana where Dr. Raney was a successful general practitioner for six years. The family moved to Miami where he completed his residency in orthopedic surgery. Dr. Les Raney was highly respected at Boca Raton Community Hospital where his wife, Harriet Raney, RN, would often assist him during arthroscopic surgeries. His beloved wife Harriet preceded him in death on February 20, 2002. He was also preceded by his son, Michael Edward Raney. He is survived by his devoted son, Laurence Hunter Raney, MD and his wife Geraldine of Charleston, SC; and loving daughter, Ellen Marie Raney, MD of Honolulu, HI; four sisters, Esther Marie Fetterhoff, Sherry Jean Kuntz, Peggy Timmons and Joyce Hopkins. Funeral services will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at St. Gregory's Episcopal Church. Donations may be made to the Jacob L. Raney, MD, Endowed Scholarship & Research Fund. Checks for the fund should be made payable to Tulane University, mailed to Office of Planned Gifts - Tulane, 3439 Prytania St., Suite 200; New Orleans, LA 70115 in memory of Jacob L. Raney, MD.
