Funeral services for Luther Jay Barnett, 81, West Plains, will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 24,2010 in the Rose Chapel, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.

Mr. Barnett died 7:28 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, 2010 in Brooke Haven HealthCare. He was born March 8, 1929 at Lanton, Missouri to Luther Langston and Pearl Mae Crabtree Barnett. At the early age of 14, Jay, as he was called by most friends, was on his own and working for the West Plains Cheese Company. He lived with several of his cronies, the Morgan's, Hawkin's, and Morrison families. Then he met Mary Katherine Pliler and at the ripe age of 17 and Mary, 18, they got married on May 11, 1946, and on May 11, 2010, celebrated 64 years of marriage. To this union four children were born, Beverly Kay Barnett-Jones, Luther Woodson Barnett Junior, Ronald Eugene Barnett and Randall Dale Barnett. Jay and Mary, in their early years, traveled to Oregon and Kansas to find work. Jay worked, for a short time, in the oil fields in Kansas, then they returned to West Plains and tried farming; Jay worked at the International Shoe Factory to help support the farm. He also worked at Southwest Truck Body, as an assembly man, Crosswinds Furnace Company and Willow Springs Manufacturing as a welder. He made many life long friends at each place he worked. He also loved to play pranks and tell jokes to those life long friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Barnett, of the family home; his daughter, Beverly Kay Jones, husband, M. L., Pomona, Missouri; three sons, Junior Barnett, wife, Judy, Willow Springs, Missouri, Ronnie Barnett, wife, Kathy, Pottersville, Missouri, and Randy Barnett, wife, Becky, Mountain View, Missouri; four grandchildren, Melissa Jones, Eugene Barnett, wife, Brandy, Katie Howard, husband, Justin and Heather Danahy, husband, Terry; five step-grandchildren, Cheryl Stillwell, Chuck Cauldwell, Clayton Cauldwell, Micheal Williams and Justin Barnett; nine great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mabel Ball and Rosalee Harvey; one brother, Jim Barnett; several nieces and nephews; and lots of friends.

His parents, three brothers, Bill, Marion and Frank Barnett, two sisters, Edith Dykes and Ethel Sharp, father-in-law, Dave Pliler, mother-in-law, Rosey Pliler and grandson, Micheal Lee Jones, precede him in death.

He will be sorely missed by all of us that knew and loved him.

Mr. Barnett will lie in state from 12:00 p.m., Friday until service time at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Judes Children's Hospital and left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
