Born August 9, 1919, in Cedarburg, WI. Died in peace on July 27, 2004 in Milwaukee after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Beloved husband of Nancy L. Backus. Father of Brian, Claudia, Paul, Mark and Carol Kennedy and spouses Steve Brachman, Karen Backus, Kitty Backus, and Mark Kennedy. “Papa”, “Gif” and “Gramps” of 10 loving grandchildren, Micah, Genevieve, Emily, David, Jessica, Megan, Jonathan, Lawrence, Michael and Colin. Further survived by his dear sister, Hazel Clark of Tampa, FL and many deeply loved family members.

Karl attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison where he met his wonderful wife, Nancy, when he asked her, as a waiter in her sorority house, “Would you like some peas?” He earned his law degree but chose to use his education and business acumen to help everyone from individual clients to corporations make wise investments through his long association with the Milwaukee Company and the Marshall Company.

Karl was an avid sportsman enjoying hiking, skiing. Hunting and fishing, tennis and golf. He was a member of the Heilger Heugel Ski Club, the Town Club and the Fox Point Lutheran Church. A lifelong Milwaukee area resident, Karl spent his retirement years traveling and wintering in sunny Sarasota FL. He will be remembered for his boundless energy, generous spirit, love of nature and the north woods and concern for the well being of friends and family.
Karl’s life will be celebrated on his 85th birthday, Monday, Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Fox Point Lutheran Church, 7510 N. Santa Monica Blvd., Fox Point, WI.
