MRS. JAMES S. GARRETT
Mrs. James S. Garrett, for many years a resident of the vicinity of Purdy, died on Saturday, January 14, 1933, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Hunt, in Knoxville, Iowa, at the age of 76 years and 23 days, after an illness of about a week with pneumonia.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. F. A. Moore, assisted by Rev. Bernis Fluch, were held at the Methodist church in Columbia on Monday afternoon at two o'clock, with burial in the Columbia cemetery.
Elizabeth Ellen Bingaman, daughter of Henry and Rachel Bingaman, was born in the Oakdale community on December 22, 1856. Her entire life was spent in the Oakdale and Pleasant Prairie vicinities. On October 23, 1879, she was united in marriage to J. S. Garrett, and to this union three children were born, all of whom are living.
Mr. Garrett passed away six years ago. Since that time she has resided at the old home place where her son, Clarence, also resides. She was visiting at the home of her daughter when taken ill.
Mrs. Garrett was converted when a child at the old Oakdale log schoolhouse during a revival meeting. Her life was one of devotion, sacrifice and service, and her Christian faith was an inspiration to all who knew her.
She is survived by two sons, T. N. and Clarence Garrett, of Pleasant Prairie, and one daughter, Mrs. John Hunt, of Knoxville, and seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren; also three brothers, H. P. Bingaman, of Williamson, John Bingaman, of Gosport, Lewis Bingaman, of Columbia, and one sister, Mrs. Hester Overton, of Chariton, and one half sister, Mrs. Lavina Pearson, of Oklahoma.
