Civil War Union Naval Officer. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, he began his US Navy career as a Midshipman in 1823. During the Civil War, as a Captain of the gunboat U.S.S. Essex, he served gallantly up and down the Mississippi River engaging Confederate gunboats and Southern shore batteries. On July 22, 1862, the U.S.S. Essex, attacked and disabled the Confederate ship C.S.S. Arkansas on the Yazoo River below Vicksburg. His last action in the war occurred in September 1862, when the U.S.S. Essex conducted bombardments along the Louisiana coast. He was promoted Commodore, assigned to duty at New York, where he remained until his death of heart disease. In 1942, the Navy Destroyer U.S.S. William D. Porter (DD-579), was named in his honor.
