----------

WEBSTER Anna Capen Webster died peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010.

Anna was born Aug. 24, 1924 in Bennington, the eldest of four children of Rev. Nathan Capen and Ida Paddock Capen.

She graduated from Brandon High School in 1941 and received a BA from UVM in 1946. She returned to school in the 1960s to receive her teaching certificate, and taught French at Edmunds Junior High School for four years. Like many of her era, Anna married her college sweetheart, Lt. Fred Webster in 1943, while he was on leave. Over the next 12 years, they moved 13 times for his teaching career. She loved bargains and kept her growing family well fed and clothed on a limited budget. Keeping that family well clothed and fed was also a testimony to her creativity, often her children's clothing was sewn or knitted by her, and her culinary skills were always appreciated by anyone who sat at her table. She loved crafting, making shell jewelry, and later joined the Vermont Hand Crafters where she sold tiedyed scarves and appliqued bibs. Thanks to a cake decorating class in the 50s, she learned to create beautiful and tasty wedding cakes for many generations of family and friends. She also garnered countless prizes for her baking at the Champlain Valley Exposition. She was an active member in the College Street Congregational Church, where she served on many committees and sang in the choir. She was a member of PEO Chapter C. While her husband was an active member of the UVM faculty, she was active in the Home Arts Group for faculty spouses.

Anna is survived by her husband, Fred Webster; and her siblings, Ford Capen, Rose Berlani, and John Capen.

She is also survived by her six children, David Webster and his wife, Carol Brantley, Ronald Webster and his wife, Patty, Carol Blair and her husband, James O'Donnell, Alice Wakefield and her husband, Lynn, Sandra Niquette and her husband, Gary, Wendy Farrell and her husband, Skip. They also have 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are made by Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home. There will be a viewing at College Street Congregational Church on Thursday, Oct. 14 beginning at 1:30 p.m., which will be followed by a Celebration in song at 2 p.m. and a worship service at 2:30 p.m.

The interment will be Friday, Oct. 15 at 10:30 a.m. in the Old Cemetery on Pleasant St. in Randolph. Gifts can be made in her honor to College Street Congregational Church.
