WWI Veteran

Henry was born in 1870 to parents George St. Clair (an Episcopal minister) and Esther Walker (Red Bird Woman). He was educated at the Shattuck Military school, and later at the Seabury Divinity school, both in Faribault, MN. He married Almeda Jones in Minneapolis, MN on November 2, 1889. Together they had 10 children. After graduating from divinity school, he was ordained a deacon on June 25, 1899, and was later ordained an Episcopal priest in a ceremony at the Church of St. Cornelia on June 12, 1904. He was appointed to serve at the Birch Coulee mission which was under the control of Susan Salisbury, a lay missionary. Frustrated by her control, he requested and received a transfer in 1917 to the Sisseton reservation of South Dakota. Here he served several area churches. During this time, the U.S. entered World War I, and Henry joined the military, serving as an army chaplain. He returned to Birch Coulee in the late 1920s, where he later retired. Following the death of Almeda in 1952, Henry lived with two of his sons. He died in 1958 at the age of 88.
