During the unit's participation in the Spring 1864 Overland Campaign in Virginia, he was wounded by a sharpshooter in the left leg while the regiment was digging rifle pits near Cold Harbor, Virginia on May 31, 1864. The leg was amputated that day, and he lingered until he died of his wounds at the Seminary Hospital, Georgetown, Washington, DC on June 9, 1864.
