Note:
Brainard started his career in a dry goods store in Hartford as bookkeeper; later (1866) he moved to Suffield and devoted his attention to farming, specializing in tobacco. He also bought horses in Canada and sold them in the local markets. He was prominent in the general life of the community and in 1883 he represented his district in the State Legislature. This fact speaks highly of his personal popularity and the esteem in which he was held, as he was the only Democrat to hold that office up to the time of his election, or even to as late as 1917. For fifteen years he was the State Game Warden.
