Casualty of WWII,Ernest was under training as a pilot flying an Oxford Airspeed aircraft in the vicinity of its base at RAF Cranwell when he collided with one of the squadron formation of Spitfires south-east of Wellingore, an RAF station in Lincolnshire.Serial No. AD 291 was piloted by the Pilot poet, John Gillespie Magee, the famous pilot poet whose renowned work is reproduced here.

Ernest was serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve;Service No: 1314735.He was 19 and the son of Ernest and Mary E. Griffin, of Headington, Oxford.Both pilots failed to bale out from their machines and they plunged to the ground half a mile apart.
