Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Iowa Governor. Served in the Civil War first as Major of the 3rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel of the 22nd Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services during the war". A friend of President Abraham Lincoln, he was at Ford's Theater on the evening of April 14, 1865, and witnessed the assassination. He was one of the officers who carried Lincoln across the street to the Peterson House. He served as Governor of Iowa from 1864 to 1868.
