Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. Prior the Civil War, he was a prosecuting attorney and a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives. At the start of the Civil War, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-seventh Congress, serving 1861 to 1863. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served in the Union Army as a Colonel and aide-de-camp to the 119th Regiment, 7th Indiana Calvary. For his duty to the Union, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers. After the war, he was elected to the Fortieth Congress and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving 1867 to 1875.
