Mary is the daughter of William Gowell and Lydia Parker. She married Daniel Meritt Jr Esquire on Jun 3, 1754 in Kittery, Maine. Historical information is taken from "Early Pleasant River Families of Washington County, Maine" and the inscription is taken from the Pleasant River Historical Society.

Notes on her husband: Daniel Merritt Jr "Esq.", b. in Boston MA 17 July 1727; d. at Addison 21 Oct 1816, ae. "90" [Columbia Centinel of 8 Jan 1817] [buried at Merritt Cemetery in Addison, but no grave stone survives]; sec'y to Committee of Correspondence during Revolutionary War; came from Kittery and York to eastern Maine as the land surveyor for the original proprietors [he surveyed a mill site at Milbridge for Joseph Wallis in 1769 {Lincoln Co. Records 15:97}], and settled at Wescogus {Addison} [PR 1778-1784, ADD 1790, 1800-10 w/son Richard]; in 1800 he sold settler's lot #26 at Addison to Kinsman Corthell for $200 [Washington Co Deed 2:453].

"Mrs Mary Merit born March y 21st 1727 in the town of Kittery state of (?)Massachusetts. Memento Mortis: Here lies buried the body of Mrs. Mary Merit Wife of Daniel Merit Esq. Who died July y 15th 1795 in her 69th year."
