Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. Born in Lebanon, Illinois, he was a clergyman at the start of the Civil War, helped organize the 115th Illinois Regiment and was appointed Colonel. He commanded the regiment at the Battle of Chickamauga and led the 2nd Brigade in the Army of Cumberland. For distinguished service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March 1865. After war he returned to the pulpit and was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first and Forty-second Congresses, serving 1869 to 1873. He died in Callao, Peru, while serving as a United States consul.
