Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and was commissioned a Captain in the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to Colonel in July 1862, he commanded the 103rd Ohio the entire war and was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he was superintendent of schools at Mount Vernon, Ohio and relocated to Morris, Illinois, in 1874. In 1877, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1881.
