Christian Kleine was one of ten children born to Carl Heinrich and Anna Catherine Ilsabein Kleine in Holsen, a small village a few miles west of Minden. In 1852 the Kleine family, together with a Gausmann and Poggemueller family, and a son in law, Carl Friederich Becker, emigrated to America, arriving in New York aboard the Ship Juno on September 13, 1852. These families joined a number of other German families who emigrated from the Minden area to settle a community, later known as Hope, along the boundary of Blooming Grove and Cottage Grove townships in Dane County, Wisconsin.

In 1859 Christian married Louise Meier and the couple began their family in Blooming Grove. Their eight children included Sarah, Melinda, Mary, Heinrich, Theodore, Sophia, Clara, and Elizabeth Louise. Louise Meier Kleine died in 1876 and in the early 1880's Christian moved his family to Middle Creek township in Lancaster County, Nebraska, joining his brother in law Carl Becker, who had previously moved there in the fall of 1867. The Kleine farms were in Sections 15 and 22, just northwest of Emerald.
