Bernhard Heller
Bernhard Heller, the son of Adam Henry Heller and Magdalena nee Storandt, was born on Dec. 14, 1857, in Wernshausen, Herzogtum Sachsen-Meinigen, Germany. As a seven year old boy, in 1865, he emigrated with his parents to America and came as all the early settlers from Wernshausen, first to Bloomfield, Walworth Co., Wis. A year later, 1866, he left Bloomfield with his parents and came to Burr Oak, where his parents temporarily took dwelling in a house near the present Storandt estate. From there his parents moved to Melrose, then to Black Oak, and finally into the Heller Coulee on the present Brook's farm. In this Heller Coulee the deceased lived from the time he was eleven years old, until his recent departure, a period of 65 years.
On Nov. 21, 1883, he was married to Miss Caroline Rhyme. After his marriage he bought a part of his father's farm and some adjacent land and thus created a home of his own in which he continued to live with is family until the present time. Almost three years ago, Feb. 20, 1931, he was bereaved by the death of his wife, and since that time his health also began to fail rapidly.
Mr. Heller was still of pioneer stock and possessed both a constitution and a character of robust and sterling qualities. As a Christian and member of our congregation he led a noble, honest, good life, which was exemplary. Especially during the months of his illness and suffering, he bore evidence of the lively Christian hope that was in him, and his departure is sealed with the victory of one, who has overcome all things.
The end of his sojourn upon this earth came last Thursday morning, Nov. 2, 1933, at 12:30 A.M. He attained the age of 75 years, 10 months, and 18 days. He is survived by all of his children. They are: Mrs. Olie Peterson of Mindoro, Miss Emma and Fred at home, and Mrs. Helen Kastenschmidt also at home. He is furthermore survived by seven grandchildren; one brother, Mr. August Heller of Bangor; and one sister, Mrs. Bert Munn of Santa Cruz, California.
Funeral services were conducted last Sunday, Nov. 5, at 1:30 p. m. in the home and at 2:00 p. m. in the Burr Oak Ev. Lutheran Cemetery.
"I have o'ercome life's crosses;
Grief, pain, and sorrow ceases;
Thru Christ's five wounds most holy
With God I am at peace."
