Girl Dies in Fall While Visiting Cave
"It happened before I could do anthing" said James J. LaRock recalling the tragedy that took the life of his girl-friend , Vicki Lynn Simmons, 19, of 961 Taunton Road, Sunday at Old Man's Cave.
Miss Simmons was pronounced dead on arrival at University Hospital, Columbus, Ohio at 5:00 p, m,, after falling 40-feet into a gorge in mid-afternoon.
LaRock, 22, of 201 Mt. Logan Drive, said he and the girl were walking on a trail overlooking the gorge when they came to a ditch that had been formed by water running down from the top of a hill. There was a long over the ditch, and he decided to cross the log first. When he neared the end of the log, he looked back and saw Miss Simmons slipped, he said.
Service for Miss Simmons, daughter of Curtis H. and Mona Simmons (the former Monda Fleming of Clintwood), were held at 2:00 p. m., Wednesday, at the Ware Funeral Home with the REV. Raymond Welch officiating. Burial followed in Twin Township Cemetery.
Miss Simmons was born on April 13, 1952, in Chillicothe, Ohio. Srviving in addition to her parents is a brother, Larry, at home.
Miss Simmons graduated in 1970 from Chillicothe High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She had completed her freshman year at Ohio University, Chillicothe, and was enrolled at OU's Athens campus in the fall. She was in the College of Education, studying to be, a speech and hearing therapist.
She belonged to Chillicother Assembly 60 or 69 (hard to read), Order of the Rainbow for Girls, and attended the First United Methodist Church.
She was the granddaughter of Mrs. Violet Colley Fleming, a former Clintwood resident now living in Chillicothe.
