John H. Bliss came to Erie in 1855 and in 1864 in partnership with George Selden, purchased the Erie City Iron Works. The company, founded in the 1830's, became the world's largest manufacturer of boilers and steam engines. Bliss and Selden also established the Erie Car Works, manufacturing railroad cars.
