Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Born in Montgomery County, Kentucky, he was a prosperous merchant when he joined the Confederate Army at the start of the Civil War. Commissioned a Captain in June 1861, he commanded Company A, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Division of the Missouri State Guard. Following the Siege of Lexington, he was elected Colonel of the 5th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division of the Missouri State Guard on September 24, 1861. He led his Corps at the Battles of Roan's Tan Yard, Pea Ridge, Compton's Ferry and at the Battle of Yellow Creek, he was seriously wounded and captured on September 1, 1862. Sent to a Union prison camp, he was released due poor health in June 1864. He never recovered from his earlier wounds and died at age 43 in Moberly, Missouri.
