He enlisted on 7 December 1874, at age 22, in Boston, Mass., listing his previous occupation as Teamster. He was 5 feet, 7 1/2 inches tall, with gray eyes, dark hair, and a sallow complexion. During the Battle of the Little Big Horn, his company was assigned to guard the pack train, and he survived the battle. One month to the day following the battle, and while crossing the Big Horn River to go on picket duty, he drowned. His body was later interred in the mass grave of his comrades from the battle. He was not married.
