Private, Company F, 7th US Cavalry. Killed in action at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, in which General George A. Custer and most of the 7th Cavalry were wiped out.

He enlisted on 7 September 1875, at age 35, in St. Louis, listing his previous occupation as Carpenter. He was 5 feet, 9 1/2 inches tall, with hazel eyes, brown hair, and a fair complexion. His last name is sometimes misspelled as Wanew. He was not married. During the Battle, his company was assigned to Custer's column, and he was killed in the rear of the column, along with all of the men in the column. Originally buried where they fell, the bodies were reinterred in July 1877 into a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
