He enlisted on 10 April 1876 at Crow Agency, Montana, in the 7th Infantry, for six months, and was attached to the 7th US Cavalry. Attached to Major Reno's Battalion, he was in the valley and hilltop fights during the Battle of the Little Big Horn (25-27 June 1876), and was wounded in the valley. He was one of ten Crow Indian Scouts in the valley fight, where he was wounded in the right wrist and thigh by Whirlwind, a Cheyenne Indian. He died at age 53 at Crow Agency, and was buried in the Custer National Cemetery.
