Sergeant, Company F, 7th US Cavalry. Killed in action at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, along with General George A. Custer and most of the 7th Cavalry.

John Wilkinson enlisted on 5 January 1872, at age 24, in Troy, NY, listing his previous occupation as a farmer. He was 5 foot, 7 3/4 inches tall, with gray eyes, dark brown hair, and a florid complexion. He married Anna B. Howard on 18 November 1875, but had no children. During the battle, his company was part of Custer's battalion, and were wiped out during the retreat up Last Stand Hill. The bodies of the soldiers were initially buried where they fell, until 1877, when the bodies were reinterred into a mass grave, now marked with the Battlefield Monument. His widow received a pension of $8 per month, until she married George H. Harrison on 20 May 1878, in Bismarck, ND.
