U.S. Congressman, New Jersey Governor. During World War I, he served as a Captain in the 114th Regiment Infantry, U.S. Army. After the war, he entered politics serving as city treasurer of South Amboy, New Jersey, (1920-25) and as a member of the New Jersey House of Representatives, (1923-24). He also was Mayor of South Amboy, (1925-26) and elected as a Republican to the Seventieth and Seventy-first Congresses, serving (1927-31). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed motor vehicle commissioner of New Jersey, (1931-35). In 1935, he was elected as a Republican the 56th Governor of New Jersey, serving until 1938. After leaving office, he served as the executive director of the New Jersey Unemployment Compensation Commission, (1938-42). During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps, overseas. After the war, he was again executive director of the New Jersey Unemployment Compensation Commission, from 1946, until his death from a heart attack.
